“The night sky is one of our most precious natural
resources We must preserve it for future generations!” Galaxy 72 Club
Investor FACT SHEET Our Goal SKY’S THE LIMIT is a non-profit organization seeking to
build an Observatory and Nature Center immediately adjacent to Joshua
Tree National Park, in neighboring Twentynine Palms, California, for the
purpose of engaging and educating the public in the fields of astronomy,
environmental science, and earth studies. Our site and our structures
will also provide hands-on opportunities to learn about sustainable
desert design. Site
Description and Location Ten acres of pristine Mojave Desert land, on which more than
25 native plant species have been identified, the site boasts sweeping
panoramas in all directions, and affords a particularly good view of the
brilliant night sky. Located on the East side of Utah Trail at the
entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, the site is approximately three
hours East of Los Angeles. Exit I-10 at Highway 62 to Twentynine Palms.
Pass Adobe Road to Utah Trail, turn South (right) and continue for 3.5
miles to the Observatory and Nature Center entrance on your left. Project Status The site is surveyed and staked, and plants have been moved
from areas to be graded to new locations along the nature trail.
Preliminary grading of the drives, parking areas, and Orrery has been
completed. Phase I buildings will facilitate both day- and night-time
educational activities. Pads for amateur astronomers will soon be
available. The committee expects full development of the site to take
six years, culminating with construction of the Observatory Dome and
other sustainable facilities for education and research. REACH FOR THE STARS SKY’S THE LIMIT is a grassroots all-volunteer organization.
You can help make the dream come true: Join the Galaxy 72 Club of
Investors, making a commitment to donate an amount you
choose for 72 months. Whether paid by check, credit card, or online
through PayPal, your donation of $10 or more per month not only provides
the critical funding for construction and operation of SKY’S THE LIMIT
facilities and programs, it also demonstrates the private support needed
when we apply for grants. Become an Investor! Join the Constellation Club of
Volunteers.
If you have an interest, skill, or talent — or just wish to help the
project grow — contact us, and one of our committee members will be
able to answer your questions and guide you to an area where help is
needed. Tasks range from relocating cactus plants and laying out nature
trails, to planning and hosting “Star Party” fundraising events, to
developing curricula in a variety of fields. Take every opportunity to preserve our dark night sky, a precious resource. Do all you can to reduce light pollution from your home, your neighborhood, and your city. Talk to your friends and family. Use dark-sky-friendly exterior fixtures and support organizations that work for responsible lighting practices.
